A living space for traveling

Design and technology Рboth determine the driving experience, the relationship that a driver makes with his car. But what does the car of the future look like when the steering wheel is no longer in the center? Two designers report on their Auto modified design of tomorrow.

The design has to be hot and cool

Cars will change more over the next five to ten years than they have in the past 50 years. Electrification offers us designers many new design possibilities. What that might look like is shown by the Concept EQ, which offers an avant-garde, modern and independent aesthetic. And at the same time its design reduced to the essentials reveals progressivity.

Of course it will continue to be the classic car design we are used to. But we can design “purpose design”, so go completely new independent ways. But there are also forms that are indeed timeless. A beautiful body is timeless, as shown by ancient statues; they have fascinated people for millennia.

Often designers are asked how the new cars will look – rather sporty or like a SUV with a lot of space. We will continue to experience completely new segments in the future. Designers live ahead of time, that is, they work today on the cars that will only be released in ten years.

If the legal and technical conditions are right, we will be able to drive autonomously. And then the driver in the car has time for very different things, just to pay attention to the traffic. That will not happen tomorrow, but maybe the day after tomorrow. Individual mobility will definitely evolve. The offers are becoming more varied, colorful and always more target group oriented.

“Man comes to the center”

The mobile world is currently undergoing a transformation that completely changes the way the customer views the car. Tailor-made design is becoming an increasingly important differentiator even more than today as the technologies of automated driving and electro mobility will increasingly converge. Innovation, emotion and beauty decide today as in the future on the value and character of a product.

The car of the day after tomorrow will be more than ever a place of communication. And that’s exactly what Volkswagen is showing with the “ID Family”, a fleet of progressively designed and avant-garde-designed electric vehicles. They put the focus on people; the driver’s place is the interactive center of a mobile living space with a lounge atmosphere and clear functionality.

The electric drive creates much greater freedom for us designers. Cooler openings are smaller; the axes move far outward, the proportions create new space. I’m always in rapture: everything is clear, solid volume, highest precision, a charismatic front end, iconic and concise C-pillars, flowing and sculptural surfaces and emphatically expressive wheels – that’s the layout of electric Volkswagen of the future for you.
